In football, 2022 was the year of the World Cup. Lionel Scaloni‘s Argentina won the World Cup in Qatar. This Argentinian coach has been selected in the top three of FIFA Coach of the Year.
Best coach of the year award – there are two club level legends Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti in the race.
FIFA will award the coach of the year at a ceremony held in Paris on February 27. The football governing body has released the nomination list in a press release published on its website.
An expert panel formed by FIFA nominated five men as Coach of the Year. Scaloni, Guardiola and Ancelotti were joined by France’s Didier Deschamps and Morocco’s Walid Regargui. Coaches, captains, journalists and supporters of FIFA member countries voted for the best coach from these five.
Each had a share of 25 percent of the total vote. Each voter cast three votes. Total votes are added by taking the number one vote as 5, the number two vote as 3 and the number three vote as 1.
Scaloni replaces him and will now stand in the dugout for Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar—a cycle of World Cups. Marcelo Bielsa (1998-2004) managed to last as a coach from one World Cup to another before Scaloni. Argentina’s 1986 World Cup winning coach Carlos Bilardo completed two cycles (1983-1990).
Out of five, Scaloni, Guardiola and Ancelotti are ahead in the polls. The winner of the three votes will be announced at the award ceremony. Ancelotti won the UEFA Champions League and La Liga with Real Madrid in the 2021–22 season. Real also won the 2022 UEFA Super Cup under this Italian coach.
Spanish coach Guardiola has had success in the English league. Manchester City won their fourth Premier League title in five seasons under him.
